Sylvia Lee Hairston Coleman, 71, of Roanoke, Va., answered the call of Almighty God on Tuesday, July 26, 2016. Quietly and peacefully, she departed from her earthly home to receive her heavenly reward. She was born on April 27, 1945, in Roanoke, Va. to the late Robert Hairston, Sr. and the late Beulah Basham Hairston. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Coleman, Jr. and brother, Robert Hairston, Jr.

Sylvia graduated in 1964 from Lucy Addison High School and Burrell Memorial Hospital School of Practical Nursing and was licensed in 1965 to practice as a LPN. In 1966, she graduated from The University of Virginia Operating Room Technician School and was certified as an OR Technician. She retired after 29 years of dedicated service as a Registered Nurse at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital.

Ms. Coleman was a faithful member for 42 years at Maple Street Baptist Church where Rev. Dr. Charles R. Callaway, Sr. is pastor. She served as Deaconess, Trustee, Church Treasurer, Teen Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School van driver, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Mission Ministry member, Bible Study attendee and Wednesdays' Outreach Food Ministry Cook.

Ms. Coleman was a member of numerous civic, professional and religious organizations where she received various honors and awards including "Caregiver" and "Woman of the Year" Awards. She served as President and life member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Valley Baptist Association.

Those left to celebrate her life and cherish fond memories include her brothers, William A. Hairston (Linda), of Virginia Beach, Va., Lylburn Hairston, Sr. (Yvonne), of Hampton, Va., Frederick (Freddie) Hairston, of the home and James L. Basham (Janice), of College Park, Md.; aunt, Geraldine Muse; uncles, Clyde Basham and Sherman Basham; cousins, Grace Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Williams and Theodore (Sam) Thompson; distant relatives; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and very close friend, Dorothy Holmes.

A Celebration of Sylvia's Life will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2016, at Maple Street Baptist Church. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service.
