John was the son of Henry and Elisabeth Clark Shultz/Schultz. He was born in Kanawha County, VA. He maried Mary Ann Turley, daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Turley, in Kanawha Co on 9 July 1863. They had at least three children: two who are unknown, and Mahala Mundy (married Calvin/Calley Ruby).

John served in Company C, 7th WVa Cavalry, along with two of his brothers, Joshua and George, during the Civil War. Joshua is buried in Fox Hill Cemetery and George is buried in the Old Schultz/Shultz Family Cemetery near Alum Creek. John mustered in 3 September 1864 and mustered out 3 June 1865. He was thrown by a horse and incurred a disability for which he received a pension.
