Dougherty, one of the oldest residents of this community, died at the family home in Bremen Friday after an illness of a week following a stroke of apoplexy.
Emily Jane Beckner was a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Beckner and was born August 9, 1848, in Dalles county, Missouri. She was eighty-eight years and eight months old a the time of her death Friday. During the Civil War she came with her parent to a farm near Bremen and she had been a resident of this community since that time. On February 2, 1868, she was united in marriage with Levi Kitch, who died in 1881. She was united in marriage with Ephraim Q. Dougherty on December 2, 1883. Twenty-two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Dougherty moved from their farm, south of Bremen, to their residence on Eash Maple street in Bremen.
Surviving relatives are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Milton Young; two step-sons, Edward Dougherty of Limon, Colorado, and Noah Dougherty of Bremen; one foster daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Snyder of Hillsdale, Wisconsin; one brother Moses Beckner of Goshen; three sisters, Mrs. Harriett Hess of Bremen, Mrs. Martha Bolin of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Clara Bair of Rochester. There are to grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two oclock at the Church of the Brethren. Rev. C. C. Cripe of Argos, assisted by Rev. John Metzler of Bourbon, officiated in the service. Mrs. Dougherty had been a member of the church for nearly seventy years. Burial was in the Bremen cemetery.
