Elsworth L. Abbott, 91, of Falls City, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Auburn. He was born Dec. 27, 1921, at Smith Center, KS, the son of the late Jarrott E. and Lissie V. (Warner) Abbott. Elsworth moved to Falls City with his family during the Christmas holiday in 1936 and graduated from Falls City High School in 1939.
He worked at the Fairmont Ice Cream store, at the theaters, washing windows, at Shaffer's Market, as a fry cook and dishwasher at Brown's Cafe and at other odd jobs as a young man. Following graduation, Elsworth served on the survey team for the new underground telephone system being proposed for Falls City and later helped with the system's installation. When Highway 159 was being constructed between Rulo and Falls City, he worked on the crew that constructed all of the bridges between the two towns. Elsworth also worked as a carpenter in Falls City and Omaha. On reaching the age of 21, he went to work as a brakeman for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and served in a number of positions. He spent his last 15 years prior to retirement as a senior sales engineer for General Railway Signal Co. of Rochester, NY. He retired in February 1988 and returned to Falls City.
Elsworth married Irene F. Dryer on July 19, 1940, at Holton, KS. They were later divorced. He married Florence I. VanDalsem on Aug. 7, 1949, at Hiawatha, KS. She passed away Mach 19, 2007.
He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 2, 1944, at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, and was discharged Oct. 18, 1946, at the Separation Center, Ft. Dix, NJ. Elsworth served in the European Theater and was recovering from injuries when the war in Europe ended. He was then assigned to the Pacific Theater, but Japan surrendered before he reported for duty.
Elsworth was a member of the First Christian Church in Falls City and served as chairman of the Stewardship Committee, was a member of the Board of Trustees, the Budget and Finance Committee and the Church Board. He was a member of Falls City Lodge No. 9, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, serving as Worshipful Master during 1990, 1992 and 1997. He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge #963 for more than 20 years, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1765, a member of American Legion Post No. 102 and a member of the National Rifle Association. He belonged to the Falls City Lions Club and was named Lion of the Year for 1992. He also served as an officer and director of the Richardson County Historical Society for several years. Elsworth was a member of the Shrine Clowns and the Rag Top Unit, as well.
His daughter, Shirley Diaz, Humboldt, 20 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren survive him. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, daughters Judith Niemeyer and Charlene Fahrmeyer, sons Marvin and William Hinton, a grandchild in infancy and two sisters, Elsie Turner and Lilda Lutz.
The body of Mr. Abbott has been cremated and memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the Dorr & Clark Funeral Home, with Pastor Victor Haworth officiating. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
