East Sandwich--Antoinette Smith, 92, passed on June 21, 2018. She left on a double rainbow at dawn on the summer solstice. It was no surprise to her family that a woman whose life burned so full and bright would choose to depart on the day with the longest light.

Born into a large family in East Taunton in 1925, she excelled in school and went onto graduate from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science degree whereupon she became a teacher. She married another teacher, Philip Smith, in 1949. In 1952 Philip re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After 25 years of too many moves and homes they retired in 1977 to put down roots in East Sandwich. They started a business in tax preparation. She was his bookkeeper. Antoinette also provided bookkeeping services for the Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen.

Although she gave up her teaching career, she never gave up teaching. Her oldest son remembers lugging a heavy, nerdy briefcase loaded with all his books back and forth to school because if he left a book at home, she would read it, then quiz him over the supper table.

Her insatiable curiosity and desire for learning never stopped. She was well informed with insightful opinions about gardening, politics, education, history, literature and the arts. An ardent amateur naturalist she was also an avid gardener. Being on her knees in her garden was her form of prayer. Her home is graced with distinctive oil paintings of her own floral displays.

Antoinette is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Smith Babchia (Zouhair) from East Sandwich; and her two sons, Richard Smith (Melodee) of Minnesota and William Smith (Sue) of Colorado. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Louisa and Zaccaria Babchia. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at the Bourne National Cemetery.
