He was born in Wauseon, Ohio, the son of Philipp and Elizabeth Hess.
Paul was a veteran of World War II, servicing in the Air Force as a gunnery instructor. For over 30 years, Paul owned and operated Hess Shoe Store in Archbold, Ohio.
Paul's wife of 64 years, Phyllis Hess, preceded Paul in death. He is survived by daughter Christine Hess of Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia, son David Hess of Greenville SC, and fourteen nieces and nephews.
Paul was also preceded in death by sisters Elizabeth Ries and Lucille Roth, and brothers Jacob and Harmon Hess.
Paul was a wonderful father and husband, and was involved in many church-related activities including teaching Sunday School, migrant ministry and serving on deacon boards. In addition, for 26 years he presented weekly inspirational gospel messages at area fire station locations.
