Stephanie Lyne Givehand Woods was a daughter, sister, auntie, mother, grandmother and wife to the late Curtis Woods.

Before she was a grandmother and wife, she was James and Edith Givehand’s first born Daughter. The Givehand’s first lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before making the move to Los Angeles. Once in LA, James took on a career as a machine press operator while Edith stayed home and raised the children until she started her teaching career. Both of her parents modeled what it was like to be active participants in educating their children.

A product of Milwaukee and Los Angeles catholic schools, Stephanie Givehand was an active young woman in the church. While attending Regina Caeli High School in Compton, California, she became a Catholic Youth Organization Youth Worker. There, she would work within the after school and summer programs helping children with academic and extracurricular activities. She would even spend her summers organizing field trips and group activities for the children.

Once she graduated from high school, she was focused on starting her own family. She met Curtis Woods who she later married. Soon thereafter they would have kids of their own, LaMesha, Sarah, Curtis, Mattie and Chris.

Stephanie was a parent’s volunteer at her children’s school early on. All the parents and teachers would call on her to help them around the school and for special events. She became one of the best track coaches for St. Michaels Elementary School, taking her team to track and field meets and breaking records, something she was very proud of.

While Stephanie was doing all the extracurricular activities, she still held down a job with the City of Los Angeles where she was a maintenance supervisor for 25 years. Her workers were sad to see her retire. She was truly loved by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Once she retired from the City of Los Angeles, she and her family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to be near her parents. She would always say “I now have time to be a lady of leisure”. But after moving to Las Vegas Stephanie decided her true calling was being “Granny”.

She always had a special place in her heart for her grandkids. She was what one might call a traveling grandmother. She was always there to take her grandchildren to games or dance performances. She made sure to plan her own activities around theirs, so if her grandkids had an event, she would let you know that shoe would not be free until her grandchildren had completed their activities and were secure in the house for the night. Stephanie was a great role model for all people she encountered. She was a true advocate for all children. She always spoke up for them, comforted them, fed them and provided rides to those that did not have one to and from various activities.

When people used to ask Stephanie Lyne Woods to describe herself she would reply “I am just a granny taking care of my grandchildren”. And take care of them she did! She did what she loved up until her last days. She volunteered at the different schools her grandchildren attended and continued to provide love and support to all those she encountered her entire life.
