Services for Jimmie Joe McKinley, 84, of Longview will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 8, at the New Journey Cumberland Presbyterian Church (Formerly First Cumberland Presbyterian Church), 2401 Alpine Rd. with the Rev. William Rustenhaven and Lee Berger officiating. Visitation is scheduled for 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will follow in Alpine Cemetery under the direction of Rader Funeral Home in Longview.
Jimmie died April 3 following a brief illness and hospitalization. He was born July 23, 1934, in Williamson County, Texas, but was a lifelong resident of Longview. His parents were Joseph Crofford McKinley and Velma Anne Barnett McKinley.
He attended Judson Grove School, graduating in 1951 as valedictorian of his class. He then entered Kilgore College and graduated in 1953, again as valedictorian of his class. Following his father’s death in 1953, Jimmie and his mother moved to Austin where he enrolled in the University of Texas and graduated with honors with a degree in journalism. Jimmie later attended the University of Kentucky, graduating with a Master of Library Science degree.
Jimmie and his mother spent many years traveling. He was a “master planner” at making itineraries that took them around the world. He planned side trips and excursions to places that others had never visited. Jimmie also enjoyed writing letters that were really travelogues, and family members and friends back home eagerly awaited these letters.
He was a lifetime supporter of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, serving on many boards within the denomination. He was a life-long member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Longview where he served as a trustee, elder, Sunday School teacher, usher and greeter. Jimmie always greeted everyone with a smile and a handshake.
Jimmie was a generous supporter of many charitable organizations and institutions of learning. He was a charter member of the Gregg County Historical Museum, a member of the East Texas Historical Association and the History Club of East Texas. He served many years on the Board of Directors of the Piney Woods Chapter of the American Red Cross and was a long-time docent for the East Texas Oil Museum in Kilgore. He served nine years as a trustee of Bethel College (now Bethel University) in McKenzie, Tenn.
Jimmie is survived by several cousins, including special cousins June Johnson of Longview; Ethel Beal Benedict of Burnet; and Michael Benedict and his wife Mary of Fort Worth.
Memorials may be made to Bethel University (Office of the President; 325 Cherry Lane; McKenzie, TN 38201) or New Journey Cumberland Presbyterian Church (2401 Alpine Road; Longview, TX 75601).
