Robert Stewart was born in Washington, D. C. on May 6, 1924. He received a B.S. (1945) in Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D. (1954) in Physics from Iowa State College (University). While at Iowa State College (University), he was an instructor (1946-48) in Electrical Engineering; Assistant Professor (1954-1956) in Physics; Associate Professor (1956-1960) in Physics; Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering (1958-1960); Professor (1960-1988) in Physics and Electrical Engineering; and Professor (1965-1988) in Computer Science. He was the Chairman of the Department of Computer Science (1984-1986). Dr. Stewart became Professor Emeritus in 1988. He married Patricia Mary Alberding and they had two children: Martha and Scott.
