Lucy J. (Martin) Hampton, Aged 45 years, at 109 North School Street died at 5 pm yesterday. The funeral will take place at 4 o'clock this afternoon from J. M. Myall's Undertaking Parlors, interment following at Fairview.

This is Nicy Hampton Adkins Sullivan and her family. Her first name has been written in many different ways. In 1900, in Joplin, when she was with her family, her birth was given as January 1898 in MO. Her name was spelled Nicie. Her sister Cora was living next door with her husband.

In 1910, same place, she was with her dad, Daniel, now widowed, and her name was spelled Nicey J. Hampton. Born in Missouri. Her dad, born in Tennessee.

In 1918, she is listed as Nice Adkins, wife of Thomas Franklin Adkins. I have not been able to find their marriage license or date. Maybe married about 1916. No children listed at that time in his WWI draft. Lived in Joplin.

In 1920, she was Nicy Adkins, with her husband, Thomas F. Adkins 41. Children: Luster (Lester) 17--maybe son from first marriage to Ida), Westley (Wesley Lee) 9 (another son maybe from another wife), Franklin (Frank Columbus) 3, Madaline (Ruth Madeline) 7 months. In Joplin.

In 1930, same place, Nica Adkins, with Thomas, Frank 13, Ruth 10, Wilbert 8, and Carol 6 (male)

Thomas Adkins 52, Nica Adkins 32 Wife, Frank Adkins 13 Son, Ruth Adkins 10 Daughter, Wilbert Adkins 8 Son, Carol Adkins 6 Daughter (Son). Nicy's age at first marriage was given as 17 in the 1930 census.

In 1940, same place (Joplin), Nicy Sullivan, with Mabel 23, "Gene" 16, Betty 13, Frank Adkins 23, Ruth Adkins 20, Wilmot Adkins 18, Carrol Adkins 16, Roger Adkins (Sullivan) 1.

In the death certificate for Roger Sullivan, his mother is given as Nicy Hempton [Hampton], born in Galena, MO.

Nicy married Walter Sullivan in April 18, 1940, contrary to what is indicated as their year of marriage in her memorial: Name Nicy Adkins.

In 1950 she is listed as Nicy Sullivan. Lived in Joplin with husband Walter age 60, Nicy age 52, and son Carroll Adkins age 26. Walter worked as a construction worker on a viaduct. Nicy worked as a washerwoman in a private home, and Carroll worked as a laborer in a meat packing plant.

All records have her born in Missouri. Agree that her middle name began with an "E", and wonder about the middle initial of "J". Haven't found anything that confirms a middle name of Emma.

You now have one, and refuse it. How many other times have you or someone else found the truth and turned it down?

Since she returned to the Galena area, and there are other relatives living around there, Kansas, Missouri, and probably Oklahoma, why couldn't she have been born at Galena? It's been my experience that when anyone with other Galena, Kansas area connections, living in Joplin, Missouri, has lived in the Galena, Missouri area, they are often assumed to have been born in Galena, Missouri also. She may have indeed been born there, but she also may not.

In fact, I've learned due to very bad writing, poor and little to no record keeping, changing Town, County and State lines, many people don't know when or where they were born. The old records can be wrong for many reasons.
