Elmer served proudly in the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Bennion DD662 in the Pacific theatre. Elmer was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. He retired in 1993 after working 30 years for Amtico/Congoleum Corporation as a quality control manager. He was affectionately known to his family as Pop Pop.
Elmer was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Norma Jane. Elmer is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Saundra and Roger Schneider, Norine and Wayne Neville; four grandchildren and their spouses, Wayne and Stacy, Andrea and Jason, Brandon and Colleen, Lauren and Ed; three stepgrandchildren and their spouses, Anthony, Stephanie and Sean, Sara and Brian. With all the blended families, Elmer is survived by 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Frank DeShantz of Pittsburgh, PA, and several nieces and nephews.
