Larry W. Smallwood, 77, of Bridgewater, passed away on Monday, April 01, 2019, at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Smallwood was born August 13, 1941 and was the son of the late Dorothy Gooden Smallwood and the stepson of the late Ray Smallwood. He was also preceded in death by his dearly loved grandparents, Scott and Ruby Oliver Gooden.

Larry grew up on the eastern side of Rockingham County and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1959. He was a member of the Mt. Crawford United Methodist Church and worked for the Town of Bridgewater and Shen-Mar Foods before starting his construction business, Smallwood Home Remodeling in 1978.

He was a 57-year life member of the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department, past worship master of Eureka Lodge #195 A.F. & A.M. in Bridgewater, past leader in the Bridgewater Steam and Gas association and spent many years helping with the annual lawn party and parade by running the sawmill that week with his antique 1949 Case L.A. Larry was instrumental with the opening of the Bridgewater Historical Museum and was active with the Rockingham County Fair, as well as a dedicated fan of the Bridgewater Reds - Rockingham County Baseball League team. His heart was always on the shores of South Nags Head - Diamond Shoals and Jeanette’s Pier.

On August 11, 1962, he married Anne Hodges Smallwood who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Wesley Smallwood and fiancée, Dianne Jones; one daughter, Jill Glick and husband, Mark; two beloved granddaughters, Ally Morgan Glick and Faith Rosa Smallwood, who were the light in his eyes and joy of his life. Also surviving is his dear sister, Rhonda Lentz and friend, Tom Fulk.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.., Thursday, April 4, 2019, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Russell Heinrich and Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Please join the family at the Mt. Crawford Cemetery for a service of the Fireman’s Last Call following the funeral service.

Masonic rites will be conducted at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, all are welcome to attend. The family will receive friends following until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department, 304 N. Main St., Bridgewater, VA 22812; Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 North Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607; or Mt. Crawford United Methodist Church, 360 North Main St., Mt. Crawford, VA 22841.
