Edward was born in Hanover Germany to Regina "Julia" Benjamin & Solomon A. Hammerslough (Ashkenazi Jews). He immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1851 when he was 13 years old.
Edward was a merchant and with his brothers, started the "Hammerslough Bros. Clothing" stores and opened up locations in New York, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Maryland. Edward worked in the Springfield Illinois shop for awhile but then moved back to the New York City location.
Edward married Shophia Monheimer on June 23, 1867 in New York when he was 29 and she was 19 years old. Their children (spouses) include: Sylvia (Isaiah and Issac) Josephi, Adele (Hugo) Schweitzer, Blanche Louise (Bernard) Weiler, Gertrude Eleanor (Jerome) Alexander.
