Herbert Lee Phillips, 85, of Alum Springs died Friday, March 29, 2019. He was born April 29, 1933, son of the late Harry James and Lula Etta Wilson Phillips. He attended Junction City Schools. He was a crane and heavy equipment operator through Operating Engineers Local 181 Union for 60 years. Herbert was kind hearted and gladly did anything for anyone include volunteering at the American Legion Bingo games where he made everything fun and was lovingly called “Grandpa” by the participants. He loved to play chess and cards, to golf and watched old westerns with his children and grandchildren and especially enjoyed family dinners and celebrations. He always surprised all children with the “quarter trick” when he pulled a quarter from their ear. He camped with his family and at Christmas he would dress up as Santa Claus and make surprise visits to children. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Janine Phillips.Herbert is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Douglas Phillips, his children, Sherry (Marvin) Turpin of Alum Springs, Linda Marie Phillips of Danville, Teresa Kay Belcher of Hubble, James Lee Phillips of Parksville, Randall Gene (Keisha) Phillips of Mitchellsburg, Christopher Lee Phillips I of Alum Springs and Christopher Lee Phillips II of Alum Springs, fourteen grandchildren, Lee (Katie) Phillips, Louren (Matt) Kidd, Jarrod Harrington, Isaiah Phillips, Adam Lee Wilson, Kristin Dawn Minix, Desi Phillips, Dakota Phillips, Kristen (Chris) Hazlett, Troy (Mindy) Turpin, Jarrod Nicholas Phillips, Timothy Phillips, Ryan (Waylon) Wiser and Korey Phillips who all lovingly called him Papaw or Pa, twenty-two great-grandchildren, Dillon Phillips, Will Phillips, Alie Goode, Ayden Phillips, Sophia Phillips, Keirra Reddin, Kayla Wilson, Brent Minnix, Jarrod Minnix, Zach Lynn, Mykah Turpin, Brennin Hazlett, Caia Turpin, Carson Pendygraft, Skyler Phillips, Graycee Phillips, Walker Wiser, Wyatt Wiser, Kaydance Wiser, Kameron Phillips, Brayson Phillips, Chesten Phillips and one great-great granddaughter, Zoey Redden.The funeral service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Junction City. Rev. JR Fields will officiate. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Isaiah Phillips, Christopher Phillips II, Troy Turpin, Mykah Turpin, Lee Phillips, Nicholas Phillips, Timothy Phillips, Korey Phillips and Jarrod Harrington. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Douglas, Raymond Phillips Jr, Butch Phillips, Ken McQueary, Marvin Turpin and Chris Hazlett. Visitation will be Tuesday after 5 p.m. at Stith Funeral Home, Junction City. Memorials are suggested to the Kosair Children’s Hospital.
