A native of South Africa, and one of the most renowned Royal Air Force fighter pilots in the Battle of Britain, Malan is noted not simply for his skills in the air, and victories over enemy aircraft, but for his leadership, including his famous "rules of air fighting." He returned to South Africa after the war, and was an opponent of apartheid before withdrawing from politics. He died of Parkinson's disease. On his tombstone appear these words: “In the shadow of Thy wings will I rejoice.”
