Billy Wayne Wood, 88, resident of New Albany, passed away peacefully Thursday June 1, 2023, at Union County Health and Rehab Center following a brief illness.

A Military Service honoring Mr. Wood's life will be 3 PM Sunday June 4, 2023, in the Memory Chapel of New Albany Funeral & Cremation Care located at the corner of Bankhead and Hwy 30. Bro Andy Russell will officiate, and visitation will be from 1 PM until Service Time.

Mr. Wood was born July 9, 1934, in New Albany to the late Leslie "Pap" and Eunie Pickens Wood. He was a graduate of Ingomar High School and was married to his beloved wife of 61 years, the late Dorris Simmons Wood who precedes him in death. He started working at the young age of 15 driving a truck and hauling general freight. He was a hard worker and while driving a truck, he also worked on the family dairy farm. He took pride in serving in the United State Army and was very devoted to his country. He was a provider to his family and after 69 years of work, Mr. Wood retired at the age of 84.

A Christian and lifelong member of Martin Baptist Church, Mr. Wood was blessed with a musically inclined family. They were known as the "Singing Wood Family" and in his early 20's even released their first album. He had a passion for music and was best known for his ability for playing bass and guitar. He was a member of the Shriners Motorcycle Club and a Mason. He had a vibrant attitude, outgoing personality, and ability to talk to anyone. Mr. Wood was very family oriented and valued time shared with family and friends. Mr. Wood be remembered most for loving people, enjoying life, and being "Pawpaw" to those that mattered most.

Those left to cherish his memories include two daughters, Vicky Latham and Melinda Johnson (Luther), two sons, Rickey Wood (Debbie) and Tony Wood (Kim), two sisters, Etoye Baker and Jamie Ruth Gunter (Jim), one brother, Bobby Wood (Janice), eight grandchildren, Hine Wood (Dru), Samantha Awtrey (Tyler), Colt Wood, Dalton Wood (Kristen), Joshua Latham, Shannon Crum (Greg), Jared Taylor (Kim), and Heather Prowell (Eddie), ten great grandchildren, Oakley, Gracey, Harper, Princeton, Taylor, Baleigh, Jacob, Eric, Nicole, and Rhett, and one great great grandson, Grayson.
