Dr. Thomas Kirk Burchard, M. D., was born February 16, 1948, in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, the Son of Dr. Charles Henry Burchard, PhD, AIA, Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, at Virginia Tech. (NYC) and Helen Elizabeth Schwob Burchard, Librarian (Moundsville,WV). Thomas's Father was finishing his post graduate work at Harvard University, when, the entire family, Charles, Helen, his older sister and Thomas, barely two years old boarded the RMS Queen Mary for a fellowship year in England in 1950 and returned aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth in 1951. The family then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, near Helen's hometown of Moundsville, WV where Charles began his career and where Thomas attended Cincinnati schools through the first two years of Walnut Hills High School, where he played Junior Football and was on the Swim team. Thomas lived longer in Cincinnati than anywhere in those early years and it was his hometown so it was natural that he would return there for his internship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Thomas transferred to Blacksburg High School, in Blacksburg, Virginia, where his Mother became a librarian, when his Father was the Founding Dean of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. Burchard Hall named for him, was completed in 1998. It was designed to address an acute shortage of space for the architecture and industrial design programs in the School of Architecture. Charles Burchard was a colleague of, I. M. Pei. The building was constructed underground -- with four pyramidal skylights illuminating studio spaces below -- to preserve Cowgill Plaza, a popular meeting place and campus thoroughfare. Tom, his sister and brother attended its dedication.

Life Well Lived
A life well lived is a precious gift
Of hope and strength and grace,
From someone who has made our world
A brighter, better place
It's filled with moments, sweet and sad
With smiles and sometimes tears,
With friendships formed and good times shared
And laughter through the years.
A life well lived is a legacy
Of joy and pride and pleasure,
A living, lasting memory
Our grateful hearts will treasure
