Winnie was a native of Pearl River County and Caesar, Mississippi. Her grandfather was Dr. F. Z. Goss, memorial ID# 40568745, and grandmother, Winnie Weber Quarles Goss, memorial ID# 40568695, for whom she was named, are all interned at Union Baptist Cemetery at Caesar. Due to Winnie's mother contracting German Measles in her last trimester, Winnie was born completely deaf. Her parents moved for a time to the New Orleans area where Winnie attended Chinchuba Institute for the Deaf. During her teen years they moved back to Caesar and Winnie graduated from Pearl River Central High School. She married Charles Johnson and they had two children. Winnie worked at John C. Stennis Space Center for many years until her retirement and was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church.
