He was born on Dec. 26, 1935, in Lumberton, N.C., to Charlie and Lessie Bennett. He resided in Lumberton until he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955 and was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base. He spent the next several years employed with Vitro and Civil Service at Eglin. In the early 1960s he taught electrical wiring classes at Choctaw. In 1974, Neil and Barbara purchased the Playground Motor Inn, where the family spent 30 years in the motel business before retiring in 2004. He also spent many years self-employed in the construction field, which he dearly loved.
Mr. Bennett was a member of Masonic Lodge ALPHA 172 in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Hadji Temple in Pensacola, Fla.; and the Elks Lodge in Navarre.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Charles, Jenkins and Samuel Bennett.
Survivors include his two precious daughters, Janet Webb (Terry) of Fort Walton Beach, and Albra Ann Coon (Jerry) of Niceville; mother of his children and special friend, Barbara Bennett; four grandchildren, Shane Coon (Christina), Teresa Webb Leptien (Dave), Amber McBride (Joe), and Tiffani Cook (Ryan); his six greatgrandchildren, Austin, Haley, Kaleb, Brooklyn, Bentlee and Avery; loving companion, Debra O'Tuel and daughter Amy; three brothers, John, Gene and Knox Bennett; and one sister, Vivian Lamn. Many nieces, nephews and extended family also survive him.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. and funeral services will be conducted on Monday, June 11, beginning at 11 a.m. at Lewis Funeral Home, 7794 Navarre Pkwy., Navarre. Burial will follow at Jesse Rogers Cemetery in Mary Esther, Fla.
Flowers are being accepted and donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 2001 North Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501.
