James H. Barney, 86, of Mount Upton went to be with the Lord on Wednesday March 27, 2019. He was born on June 16, 1932at the home of his paternal grandparents on the Upper Great Brook. He was the oldest child of Hilton and Josephine (Warren) Barney.

Jim was raised by his foster parents, Cyrus and Betty Pike and was a graduate of South New Berlin School. He attended Morrisville College where he studied clock and watch making.

On July 25, 1970, he married Donna Christian in Mount Upton, a union of nearly 49 years.

For 32 years, he was a tool and die maker at Amphenol in Sidney. Jim loved to work with wood and made many of the pieces of furniture in his home. Jim took great pride and pleasure in restoring antique cars. He performed a ground-up restoration on his 1940 Plymouth Business Coupe, learning to do body work and painting as he went along. He also took two pickup truck loads of parts and put together a beautiful 1930 Model A Coupe.

He served as a trustee for the First Baptist Church of Mount Upton, president of the Maplewood Cemetery Association, and the Algonquin Antique Auto Club.

Jim is survived by his wife, Donna; his daughter, Debbie Graham and her five children, of Missouri; his sister, Andria Jipson, of Oneonta; his brother and sister in law, Dan and Marilyn Maine, of Waterville, his sisters in law, Ione Barney, of Waterville, and Lutgarda Barney, of Sauquoit, his brothers, Larry and Frank Barney, of Deposit; his brothers and sisters in law, Claude and Mary Christian, of Sherburne, Ronald and Ascenti Christian, of Mount Upton, and Grant and Kathleen Christian, of Norwich; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his foster parents; his sons, Jerry Barney, James Barney Jr., and Jeff Barney; his brothers, Hilton Paul Barney, and David Barney; and his sister, Eleann Fournier.

Funeral services for Jim will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 2nd, at First Baptist Church, 1741 State Highway 8, Mount Upton with Pastor Chester Sheu officiating. Burial will take place at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 1st from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. Norwich. In lieu of flowers contributions should made to the Mount Upton First Baptist Church.
