EFFINGHAM DEMOCRAT FEBRUARY 29 1923

William Curtis Babbs, son of James and Mary Babbs was born in Rising Sun,Ind., July 11,1847 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs.John Landreth of West Township, Effingham county,Ill, at the age of 76 years and 7 months.
In the year of July 25, 1868 he was married to Sarah J. Cooksey of Gilmore, Ill. To this union were born seven children namely, Willie, Jennie,Anna who preceded him in infancy, and Nellie who died Dec.23,1910. His companion departed this life Sept. 23, 1921.
He leaves to mourn his departure the following children, Mrs.Mary E. Krohn and Madison D.Babbs of Altamont, Ill, Mrs.Bessie C. Landreth of West township, also eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren,one brother Ira Babbs of Geary Oklahoma and a host of other relatives and friends.
They lived on a farm near Gilmore for several years and then finally located in Gilmore,Ill. where they resided until his wifes death. He spent the remainder of his life with his daughter,Mrs.John Landreth and family, who did all that living hands could do to relieve him of his suffering.
He was converted in a meeting place at Ashbury M. E.church conducted by Rev. Harris.
The latch string always hung on the outside of the Babbs home. They were always ready to feed and shelter anyone who may be out and down in Gilmore.
Many precious thoughts will go through the years of this old patriot, who helped to blaze the way for us to live in our country.
The funeral services were held at the house at 1:30 pm conducted by Rev.McGill of Altamont. The remains were laid to rest in the Mahon cemetery beside his wife.
