Myron E. Moore went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, March 25, 2019, at the age of 92.
Myron was born on January 23, 1927, in a country home west of Spooner to Clifford and Irma Moore. Myron graduated from Spooner High School in 1945, left home to serve in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater, and was honorably discharged near the end of World War II.
After returning home, he married his high school sweetheart, Lila (Voigtlander) Moore, on May 31, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spooner, where he was a lifelong active member starting with his baptism in 1927.
Myron grew up on the family dairy farm where they farmed with horses. His grip could attest to the fact that he milked the cows by hand. He continued to farm after he returned home from the Navy until 1959, when he became employed full-time at the Spooner Cooperative Creamery where he worked as a licensed butter maker and cheese maker. After the creamery closed, he worked for Place Construction and managed the Thilmany Wood Yard in Trego until he retired. Myron also supplemented his income by cutting pulp by hand each year.
Myron loved sports whether participating or watching. In high school he played football and boxed. He coached and played church softball and city softball and baseball. He was an avid bowler on Men’s and Mixed Doubles bowling leagues. Myron enjoyed to golf for fun competitively. He also loved to play card games, Rook, Hearts, Spades, Pinochle, and others, and always played to win.
Myron had a passion for hunting, fishing, and trapping. He hunted everything he could with bow, rifle, or shotgun – grouse, pheasant, turkey, duck, and goose. He also enjoyed fishing from shore, in a boat, or on the ice. Myron was an accomplished trapper catching fox, coyote, muskrat, mink, raccoon, skunk, beaver, otter, and fisher. He shot his last two bucks with the bow and the rifle respectively during the 2014 hunting seasons at the age of 87.
Myron had an exceptional memory before Alzheimer’s began to take its toll. He often recited Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and his favorite poem, “Trees,” by Joyce Kilmer.
The past few weeks he would quote the Bible verse John 3:16 and repeatedly sing “Jesus Loves Me.” Myron also enjoyed traditional country music.
Myron is survived by his beloved wife of more than 71 years, Lila Moore; his loving children, Shirley Thatcher of Shell Lake, Barbara (John) Peters of Neosho, Karen (Richard) Melton of Shell Lake, and Wayne (Cindy) Moore of Spooner; 16 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and his sister Joyce (Larry) Bascombe.
Myron was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Irma (nee Johnson) Moore; three sisters, Lorraine (Joe) Rohrman, Hertha (Herb) Graham, and Virginia (Alan) Engle; one brother, Carl (Geraldine) Moore; and an infant brother, Clinton Moore.
Burial will be at Spooner Cemetery.
