A son of Albert and Susan (Cook) Mulliken he came to Champaign with his parents June 15, 1855. His father was in the lumber business. He married Josephine Danforth, a native of Union County, Ohio, on September 10, 1876. She died in 1909 leaving two children: Albert D. Mulliken, a local attorney, and Pheobe Ellsworth Story of Seattle, Washington. On July 10, 1911, he married Jean Agnew of Detroit. He was resident of the county over 70 years. With little eduation, at age 8, he wjent into the Walker B rothers Store in Champaign to leanr the undertaking business. He remained with this firm until 1877. He entered into partnership with Francis T. Walker under the name, Walker and Mulliken. Upon the death of Walker in 1905, he took over the entire establishment, abandoning the undertaking business. The business, located at what is now numbered 219 N. Neil, grew into the largest furniture store in Champaign. He retired from the business in 1917. He was also a partner in the Walker Opera House located south of the store. An accomplished musician, Mulliken organized the first marching band in the city and played in the orchestra. If one stands at the corner of Park and Neil Streets and looks north, the faint remains of a sign painted on the side of 219 N. Neil proclaims it to be the Walker-Mulliken Furniture Store. Active in several Masonic organizations, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.
