Enlisted, Feb. 15, 1907, in Troop 1, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. Troop 1, Squadron A Cavalry was reorganized in 1912, to Troop A. He served with Troop A, Squadron A Cavalry on the Mexican border, June - December 1916.

World War 1, he attended Reserve Officers Training Course, May 1916, at Plattsburgh, NY. He was commissioned a Captain, Field Artillery, August 21, 1918 & promoted Major with the 57th Field Artillery, July 30, 1918. Deployed to Europe with Battery C, 305th Field Artillery, 77th Division and saw combat in France. Returned to the States, September 8, 1919 and assigned to the 58th Field Artillery. Discharged from the service Feb. 15, 1919.
