von HEYKING, Rolf Karl
November 21, 1922 – December 29, 2012

On the morning of December 29, 2012, Rolf Karl von Heyking passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary at the age of 90 years.

He was born in Riga, Latvia, on November 21, 1922. He was a member of the "Musterknaben," who were among the first Baltic-German refugees to come to Canada after World War Two, in 1948. He married Karin Stillmark in 1959 and they raised four children in London, Ontario, and then Calgary, where the family moved in 1976. He worked for Ellis-Don Construction for over 40 years, having, as "Employee #2," helped to build up that company. As construction superintendent, he oversaw the construction of some of Canada's, and Calgary's, landmarks, including Halifax International Airport, Calgary's City Hall, and Calgary's Banker's Hall. Grateful to his adopted home that offered him refuge, he was one of its great builders.

He is survived by his wife Karin; his four children Barbara Olafson (Kelly Olafson), Lori von Heyking, Amy von Heyking (Lance Grigg), John von Heyking (Sonya von Heyking); eleven grandchildren Kristin, Karin, Andrea, Lindsay, Emily, Conor, Alison, Geoff, Evie, Audrey, and Sebastian; as well as his brother Fred von Heyking and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church (3527 Boulton Road N.W.) on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Rolf Heyking, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.
