He attended Savannah/Chatham Public schools but obtained a GED certificate in 1966. He served as hospital and carpenter’s apprentice as well as electrician’s helper in the US Navy at a young age. While in Naval service, he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal as well as the American Campaign Medal. Although he was an electrician by trade, he was both a skilled carpenter and electrician. He received certification in practical and industrial electricity in January 1949. He was employed as an electrician by the Cyanamid Corporation and, later, Union Camp/International Paper, retiring in 1994 He was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple, where he was a Sunday School teacher, and, later, Meldrim Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lera Newman; his sisters, Mary Estill and Joy Kleeman; and his first wife of 36 years, Evelyn Turner Newman. He is survived by his second wife, Louise Butler Newman of Meldrim; a son, John E (Mary) Newman of Irvine, CA; a son, David Miller Newman of Savannah, a daughter, Rachel Newman Hansen of Savannah; two sisters, Jean Cupstid of Savannah and Irita Love of Richmond Hill.
