J.R. Graves, age 78, of Chelsea, OK died September 20, 2013 of lung cancer. He was born to Bill and Mamie Graves on November 8, 1934 in Lenapah, OK and lived most of his life in the NE Oklahoma area.
As a young man he learned the newspaper business and was the manager of circulation at the Gazette Telegraph in Colorado Springs, CO. for a few years. J.R. also made rodeo a lifetime pursuit and shared the love of that sport his entire life. He was a champion calf roper and team roper. He was a great storyteller, loved his burbon and enjoyed gambling at the casinos.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Decker, sons Randy Graves and Ryon Graves, two brothers, Hubert Graves of Nowata OK, and John Graves of McKinney, TX. He has four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son Rick Graves in 2006, his parents, three sisters and one brother.
A private family celebration of life and memorial is planned. The family will carry out J.R.'s wishes to have his ashes scattered at the Nowata rodeo arena where he had many happy memories.
