Claude Joseph Bernier, age 79, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 24, 2016 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica.
He was born on September 11, 1937, in Montreal Canada, son of the late John and Jeanne Paul Bernier. At a young age, Claude’s’ family moved from Montreal to Patterson, NJ and when he was fourteen came to Herkimer. He worked in his family’s business, called the Realistic Fire Place Company. When he turned eighteen he enlisted in the US Air Force, serving for four years. He then enlisted in the US Navy serving aboard aircraft carriers and later served with the NY State National Guard for thirty years. For over thirty years he served as a patrolman on the Herkimer Police Force and for fifteen years as a deputy with the Herkimer County Sherriff Department. He retired this past September. His first marriage was to Barbara Eileen who preceded him. He then married Carla. She passed away on November 5, 1991. He was later married to the former Angelique Grippe.

He had a strong belief in God and was a parishioner of St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. He enjoyed working with the youth in Herkimer. He was active with the local Boy Scouts of America, the Junior Police Academy and the D.A.R.E. Program.

Mr. Bernier spent his entire adult life serving and protecting his beloved country and community. To those who knew him he was a caring, humble and sincere man. Any conversation with him left you feeling that he genuinely cared about you. He will be sadly missed by his many friends, family and colleagues.
Surviving besides his loving wife of twenty-five years Angelique, are four children Steve, Coleen, Sandy and Jeff, a step-son Benjamin Lindenmayer of Newport, step-daughter Brittany March and her husband Thomas of Broadalbin, a brother Gillis Bernier of Florida, four grandchildren, Sarah, Kiley, Jordyn and Cameron, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and two wives, Barbara and Carla, he was preceded in death by a brother John Bernier Jr in 1985 and his sister Helene Logan in 2013 and two daughter Kelly and Karen.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 am in St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer with The Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, town of Herkimer.
