Dan was born in Kosciusko county Indiana to Alfred Mortimore & Frances Seward. They removed to Monroe Jasper Iowa after the 1850 census along with his maternal grandmother Anna Seward Van Blear Seward..
He first married Feb 18, 1861 Elizabeth Hiland, children born to them were Charles m. Philena Rader: Laura who married Wm. Brown & James Parker Ferguson; and Frank who married Jessie Crouch. He served with Co. L of the 9th IA Cavalry per list of veteran burials in this cemetery where he was listed as 6 ft tall, Blue eyes Brown hair & light complexion. Divorced Elizabeth and moved to Fairbury Jefferson County Nebraska. 6 June 1875 married Mary Etta Shelburne. Their children were Jennie Patience who married Samuel Allen Light ; Archie Bernie who married Estella Simpson; Angie May who married John Arthur, Mr Wilder & Clarence Alderdyce; Guy who died young and was buried next to his father in Fairbury city Cemetery, and there may have been a son Thomas because the name is written in The Light Family Bible but no dates.
He owned and operated a Dray Line and a sprinkling wagon in City of Fairbury Nebraska. He was a member of The Free Masons.
