Mary was born in Suring, Wisconsin on March 11, 1911, the daughter of Paul and Annie (Peterson) Maxie. Mary was raised on the family farm north of Dodge, North Dakota and attended country schools through grade eight. She graduated from high school in 1929 from Dodge before attending Dickinson State University where she received her teaching certificate.
Mary began teaching at the same rural school she graduated from earning $85.00 monthly, which dropped to $50.00 per month during the depression. Mary and Bert Olson were married on June 1, 1942 in Wibaux, Montana. Bert served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was mortally wounded in the Battle of the Bulge.
Mary and her daughter, Diana, moved to Seattle in the fall of 1948 where she began teaching that year. She retired in 1974 with 42 years of teaching behind her. By attending summer school and evening classes at the University of Washington and Pacific College she graduated with a BA in Education in 1953. After retirement Mary went with Bert's sister to visit Bert's grave in the Netherlands and toured the Holy Land with friends. She also made three trips to Hawaii and later in her life she had the joy of being with her granddaughters, working as a bus driver, cook, nurse, seamstress, story-teller, teacher, and referee.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Diana Dean of Mandan, ND; her granddaughters, Adriana of Mandan, ND, PFC Caitlin of Ft. Sam Houston, TX, and Ginger of Mandan, ND; her great granddaughter, Taylor of Mandan, ND; her brother, James Maxie of Malta, MT; and her sister, Bernice Anderson of Bismarck.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, and one sister.
