Willie Matthews
June 02, 1940 - March 19, 2019

The hour glass, with it sands of time, has slowly but surely spilled its contents, and with passing of the last sand, went the life of our loved one. On occasions like this it is hard to put into words the deep feeling we have for one who was loved by all who knew him. Today we are celebrating the life of Willie Obra Matthews.

A Time To Be Born And A Time To Die

The book of life opened for Willie Obra Matthews, 78, June 02, 1940. He was the 3rd child born and linked to the chain of the late Willie Aubrey and Soporah Matthews of Burnt Corn (Monroe County), Alabama.

Just as beautiful flowers blossom, they also discharge their seeds and die. And so it was, when the pages of life’s book was closed for Willie Obra Matthew, a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. The angel of death gently kissed him and escorted him from this earthly life and he entered quietly into the peaceful rest of God’s loving arms on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at home in Moss Point, Mississippi.

A Time To Grow

Willie grew up in Moss Point, Mississippi. He was a graduate of Magnolia High School. He was united in Holy Matrimony to his beloved Levern Fairley on December 17, 1994. They celebrated 24 years of marriage until the Lord whispered to Willie “Peace be Thine.”

Willie was employed at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi until he retired.

Brother Willie Matthews accepted Christ and became a member of the Meridian Street Church of Christ in Moss Point, Mississippi. As he grew in Christ he excelled and became a Person Work Coordinator, Prison Minister, New Convert Class Teacher and graduated from the school of Religious Studies “Class of 1996.”

A Time To Remember

Willie’s parents, Willie Aubrey and Soporah Matthews, two sisters, Betty Cannon and Zenoria Williams and one brother, James Matthews preceded him in death.

A Time To Embrace

In his passing, Willie Matthews leaves his bright smile and beautiful memories to be cherished in the hearts of his loving and devoted wife of 24 years, Levern Fairley Matthews of Moss Point, Mississippi; two sons, Jessie (Tabitha) Ross of Pascagoula, Mississippi and Anthony Ross of Mobile, Alabama; four daughters, Linda (Izial) Toles of Moss Point, Mississippi, Tammie Fairley of Moss Point, Mississippi, LaShonda (Charles) Moore of St. Martin, Mississippi and Makenzie Moore of Moss Point, Mississippi; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillie (Andy) Andrews of Montgomery, Alabama, Juanita (Alfred) Brown of California; three brothers, Charlie (Veronica) Matthews, Robert (Mary) Matthews and Thomas (Lois) Matthews all from Moss Point, Mississippi; sister-in-law, Argean (Harris) Matthews; one Goddaughter, Liana Harris of Little Rock, AR.; Monica Bodie of Moss Point, Mississippi, he looked upon her as a daughter and he leaves a host of family and friends.
