Dr. Philip C. Hughes Phil Hughes passed away peacefully at Hilton Head Island Hospital on March 16, 2013. He was born on December 10, 1932 in East Orange, New Jersey to Lee W. Hughes and Jean Morrison. He spent his formative years in New Jersey. He attended Choate School and was a graduate of Princeton University, Class of 1954, where he was captain of the golf team and member of Cottage Club. He began his post graduate work at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia where he graduated in 1958. During medical school, he met Marian (Miki) Strain and they were married in 1955 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Phil served as a Lieutenant in the U.S Navy Medical Corps from 1957 to 1962 including service at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital and U.S. Naval Hospital NAS in Jacksonville, FL. Following Jacksonville, he returned to Philadelphia to begin his residency at Wills Eye Hospital to pursue his specialty in ophthalmology. In 1965, the family moved to Dayton, Ohio where Phil entered private practice in ophthalmology which he was dedicated to until his retirement in 1996. Phil was a passionate golfer. He was overjoyed to be asked to join Pine Valley Golf Club right after he graduated from college. When he moved to Dayton, he became a member of Dayton Country Club where he enjoyed many golf achievements including Club Champion in 1971. Phil gave so much back to the game he loved dearly. He made a huge impact in Dayton and Southern Ohio with his volunteer work in the golf community. He was a devoted Director of the Western Golf Association and loyal supporter of the Evans Scholars Foundation. He was the founding member and driving force in establishing the Miami Valley Golf Association. Phil was instrumental in developing the historical collection of MacGregor Golf Company. In 2001, he was inducted into the Dayton Golf Hall of Fame. Phil was known for his sense of humor, kind spirit, and being a true gentleman. He and Miki loved traveling and had many happy memories of golf trips throughout the world. He had many interests: books, history, sports, lapidary, woodworking, dogs, art, good food and fellowship with family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife Miki. They were married for 58 years. He was an amazing father to their four children; Brad, Cyndi Millspaugh (Jim), David, Peggy Schweller (Dan) and fun-loving grandfather to six grandchildren, Craig, David, Lynn Millspaugh and Tommy, Kearsley, Charlie Schweller. He is also survived by his only brother Lee. Phil was an adoring uncle to his nieces and nephews and a wonderful friend to many. A memorial service will be held on Friday March 22, 2013, at 11:30 AM, at St. Luke's Church, 50 Pope Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have donations be made to the Evans Scholars Foundation.
