Galva Weekly News, January 7, 1909:
On Friday of last week the remains of John E. Stoneburg were brought here
from Galva for burial in the family lot. After having been in poor health for
some time he received a stroke of paralysis a week ago last Saturday and
on the Wednesday following passed away, at an age of 73 years, 1 month
and 20 days. John Eric Stoneburg was born in Ockelbo parrish, Gestrickland,
Sweden, October 31, 1835. In October 1846 with his parents and a brother and
sister he left his native land and after a voyage of about eleven weeks, arrived
in New York. The winter was spent in Brooklyn and in the spring in company
with a large party of Jansonists they proceeded on their journey to Bishop
Hill. The route taken was by way of the Hudson to Albany, the Erie Canal
to Buffalo, the Great Lakes to Chicago, and then by team and on foot to Bishop
Hill. Here be remained with the colony until its dissolution after which he engaged
in farming and was most successful on his farm north of Bishop Hill.
He was married to Miss Eleanor Swanson at Knoxville on December 22, 1864,
and to them were born two sons and four daughters, of whom one son and
three daughters survive. Mrs. Stoneburg died April 12, 1906. In 1901 he
left the farm and since then has resided in Galva. On June 4, 1908, he was
again married to Mrs. Anna Kennedy, who survives him.

The funeral services were held at the late home in Galva and were conducted by Rev. A. J Strandell of Bishop Hill.
