Died on March 9 at her La Mesa home. She was surrounded by loving family members who kept her company in her final hours.
Born Sally Drewes to parents, William and Selma Drewes, in Washington, Pennsylvania on October 1, 1924. Sally attended Monrovia High School in California. On her 20th birthday she joined the Navy. She met her future husband, Clyde Steele, a Naval Officer in 1946.
Sally is survived by son, Dr. C.Hamilton Steele and daughter, Claudia Trautmann. Grandchildren Jessica Sprague, Monica Broselle, Sara Steele-Fretwell. Nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also, her brother, William Drewes of Port Orange, FL. Granddaughter, Jessica Sprague, was Sally’s caregiver.
Tall, stately and kind, Sally was the shining light of our family. “Big Mo”, a nick name, traveled the world as navy wife. The daunting task of uprooting a family and making each new location a happy home, was performed with a ease and sense of adventure. Up every morning at 5:30 AM, hair, lipstick and dressed for the day. She took her role as wife and mother very seriously. She was our “soft place to fall”. She raised her children lovingly, with a peppering of sternness as needed.
Sally and Clyde started their volunteer service together at the San Diego Naval Hospital. Later,
she volunteered at Grossmont Hospital for several years. In her fifties, she became employed and worked at a doctor’s office participating as Secure Horizons Coordinator. She later worked for Dr. Kuritsky at Inland East Medical Group. She was later employed by Dr John Webb at Grossmont.
For fun, Sally and husband Clyde, were season ticket holders for the Aztecs, Padres and Chargers. A wonderful seamstress, she loved making dresses for herself and family members. Crafting and floral design, later in life, gave her joy. She shared fellowship at San Carlos Methodist church. On every birthday, Sally like to remind everyone that she was born the same day and year as former President Jimmy Carter.
Sally’s beauty, positive attitude and grace touched so many lives. Our family was blessed. Two days prior to her death, Sally was able to joke and say, “Don’t be sad in a maudlin way when I’m gone. Be happy like a happy face day.”
