Lyle Andrew Wendell, 78, died June 3, 2007 at his home in Custer, SD surrounded by his loving family.

Lyle was born June 11, 1928 at Mitchell, SD to Daniel and Verna (Norman) Wendell. He grew up on a farm near Artesian, SD and graduated from Artesian High School in May 1946. Lyle entered the United States Army in November of 1946 and was stationed in Frankfort, Germany. He was honorably discharged in May of 1948.

Lyle married Rose DeNeve on February 2, 1951 and they farmed until 1973. He graduated with a business degree from Dakota Wesleyan College in 1969. He taught at Dakota Wesleyan College for two years, while teaching Lyle worked for Ross Accounting Firm and ranched. Lyle was active in the saddle club and started the Sanborn County 4H horse club. In 1972 he ran for a State Auditor position and was appointed by Governor Richard Kneip to be Secretary of Revenue Department in 1972, at which time they moved to Pierre, SD. Lyle resigned from this position December 13, 1977. In May of 1978 Lyle founded the Landmark Appraisal Services which provided mass appraisal of South Dakota and several Missouri counties. In 1985 he incorporated this business into Statewide Real Estate Services, Inc. In 1995 he closed the Pierre office and moved to Custer and opened Century 21-Statewide Real Estate Services, Inc., which he operated until his retirement in 2003. Lyle enjoyed raising Black Arabian horses.

Lyle is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rose, of Custer, SD; five sons, Daniel (Jane) Wendell of Soda Springs, ID; Mark (Elena) Wendell of Westlake Village, CA; Gregory (Rose Ann) Wendell of Pierre, SD; Gordon (Carmen) Wendell of Rapid City, SD; Joel (Tammi) Wendell of Custer, SD; four daughters, Katherine (Richard) Rieck of Rapid City, SD; Jane Canaday of Juneau, AK; Ellen Nadeau of Palm Desert, CA; Barbara (Marc) Schechter of Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Bonnie Dudley of Piedmont, SD; Ruby Gosch of Eagleville, MO; nephew, Michael Rose of CA; twenty-four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Verna Wendell; daughter, Connie Denise; sister, Betty Rose and granddaughter, Shanda Erickson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at St. John's Catholic Church in Custer, SD with Father Peter Kovarik and Deacon Greg Palmer officiating. Interment will follow at the Custer Cemetery in Custer, with military honors provided by the Kenneth Kuper VFW Post #3442 of Custer, SD.

A memorial has been established in Lyle's name to benefit the Sun Catchers Therapeutic Riding Academy.
