Marian Saint Edwards
December 17, 1939 - July 16, 2017
FREDERICK, Md. - Marian Saint Edwards was the beloved creator of Saint's Nicks, custom handmade Saint Nicholas Christmas collectibles. She started them in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, and later established her "Santa's Workshop" in rural Delhi.
Born Marian Evelyn Handley on Dec. 17, 1939, to Gilbert and Dorothea Handley, she grew up in Yonkers, was a cheerleader at Roosevelt High School, and attended Susquehanna University. Post-graduation she worked as an administrative assistant at Rodale Press in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.
In 1976 she met Elliot Edwards playing the piano at a Poconos resort, and found he had also graduated from Susquehanna University and had mutual friends. Elliot became the love of her life and enduring cherished partner. They formally married in 1995, with a pastoral country wedding in the Catskills.
Starting out as a painter, then arranging dried flowers, in 1988 Marian took her love of Christmas down an artistic path, creating delightful vintage Santa figurines.
Her popular keepsakes were even featured at Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue.
Marian and Elliot loved to travel the Northeast, displaying their Saint's Nicks at holiday craft showcases. Today, son John Saint keeps the family trade going using the same exclusive techniques passed on by his mother.
Marian was sincerely loved by all that she met. With her generous smile and warm nature, it was easy to understand why.
On July 16, 2017, Marian, 77, passed at Kline Hospice House in Frederick, Maryland, with her husband and family at her side.
Marian had Primary Progressive Aphasia for several years and lived with it without complaint. Upon her death she was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore to aid in research.
She was preceded in death by both parents; and elder brother, George Handley.
She is survived by husband, Elliot F. Edwards; son, John Saint; step-daughters, Lisa Edwards, Erika Edwards and Marne Greenley; two grandchildren, Juniper Saint and Sage Saint, six step-grandchildren, Jordan Edwards Weis, Ethan Edwards Weis, Sadie Shultz, Ethan Greenley, Paige Greenley and Olivia Greenley; nephew, Stephen Handley; niece, Gail Lambert and niece, Marianne Warley, who was very special to her.
Memorials may be donated in her memory to a fund at the West Kortright Centre for the Arts, 49 West Kortright Church Road, East Meredith, NY, 13757, where they were married and spent many happy years living nearby on Irish Hill Road. Condolences may be sent to 7079 Catalpa Road, Frederick, MD, 21703.
