Wife of:
Capt. Raymond Anthony Plaunt, married September 15, 1985 in Cheboygan, Cheboygan County, Michigan. Son of Charles Plaunt and Ada Metevier.

Ruth Shampine Plaunt, age 90, of Cheboygan, died peacefully on Tuesday March 19, 2019 at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey. Born in Cheboygan on January 2, 1929, Ruth was the daughter of Herman and Rosena (Wanke) Neumann. Ruth married her best friend, Charles Shampine, when they eloped on June 17, 1947. A great pair, Ruth and Charles owned C & R Fish Market in Cheboygan. Charles was a commercial fishing boat captain on the Great Lakes bringing in the fresh catch while Ruth ran their fish market. Ruth and Charles worked well together, but also made a wonderful life doing the things they enjoyed. They loved adventure and outdoor activities, including hunting on Summer Island and trips to Wyoming to hunt antelope and mule deer. They enjoyed camping with Ruth’s brothers and sister and their families, snowmobiling, and long rides and weekend trips on their Harley Davidson. Despite not being fond of the water or being able to swim, Ruth sure did enjoy fishing and sailing the Great Lakes with Charles. Ruth and Charles were married 31 years when Charles died in 1978.
After Charles passed away, Ruth later married Raymond Plaunt on September 15, 1985 at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Cheboygan. Ironically, Ray also was a captain who sailed the Great Lakes. Blessed with finding true love for a second time, Ray and Ruth loved to travel, visiting Hawaii, Alaska, and many places in between. Once again, Ruth sailed with Ray and her grandson, Nick Connors, making a voyage down the St. Lawrence Seaway from the East Coast all the way to Cheboygan. Ray and Ruth were married for 31 years at the time of Ray’s death in 2016.
Ruth spent 18 years employed by Proctor and Gamble in Cheboygan, eventually retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Cheboygan Fraternal Order of Eagles and earned lifetime membership in Weight Watchers. Quite athletic, Ruth played first base on women’s softball league with her daughters until she was almost 60 years old. She also enjoyed bowling league and pool league. In 2018, at the age of 89, Ruth, with her partner, grandson, Justin Brandt, was the five-time family bean bag champ at the annual family camping trip at Aloha State Park. Ruth enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. She was a wonderful cook and baker, making the best apple pies and baked beans. A nurturing mother, she shared her cooking skills with her daughters, teaching them how to cook for their families. Caring and loving, Ruth was a devoted wife, supportive mother, and a doting grandma. She valued her family more than anything and her heart was full when they were all together. Close with her children, she not only was their mother, but was also a best friend to her daughters. She loved the family reunion camping trip at Mullet Lake each summer when all of her “tribe” (as she called them) was together. She adored her grandchildren, following them to every corner of the great State of Michigan to watch them play in their sports. She rarely missed a game if she could help it and didn’t mind driving across the U.P. to Kingsford or heading South to Detroit. She was generous, giving, and taught her “tribe” to cherish family. When faced with heartache and troublesome times, Ruth relied on her deep faith in God and her family to see her through. Baptized at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Cheboygan, Ruth was a member there for all her 90 years. Ruth’s gentle way, her loving heart, and her warm smile will be fondly remembered and sadly missed.
Surviving Ruth are her children, Herman Shampine (Tina Merchant), Rosemary Tracy, Linda (Dan) Johnson, Chrissy (Tony) Sutterley, Phyllis (Dave) Brandt, LeAnna (Mike) McNamara, and Curt Plaunt, all of Cheboygan and Char (Jim) McLaren of Beaverton; as well as her sister, Hazel Yerks of Rogers City and son-in-law, Ron Griggs of Cheboygan.
She also leaves 33 grandchildren, Penny (Will) St. Amour, Joe (Christy) Shampine, Michael (Carol) Coats, Shani (Chris) VanHoorelbeke, Karrie (Ron) White, Cassie (Steve) LeDuc, Christina (Tony) Whippo, Tennille (Jay) Folk, Bianca (Aaron) Thompson, Nick (Kathleen) Connors, Dionne Tracy, Justin (CherryAnn) Brandt, Dylan (Lauren) Brandt, Alisia Brandt, Ryan McLaren, Wendy (Ted) Spray, Jason Plaunt, and Kristen (Ryan) Schoenborn. And 40 great grandchildren, Stephen, Wyatt, and Morgan Coats, Shaun, Katlyn, James, and Jack VanHoorelbeke, Ethan, Brady, and Peyton Shampine, Mindy (Goran) Nikolovski, Trisha Woodgate (Delos Cripps), Darin Woodgate, Selena St. Amour, Carley Johnson, Macie and Myia White, Gavin and Hannah Whippo, Riley and Beckett Folk, Reegan and Keilan Thompson, Ariall, Cameron, and Kara Connors, Caleigh Easter, Tayla, Easton, Iza, and Brightyn Brandt, George and Grant Spray , Caleb, Emma, and Charlie Plaunt, and Olivia, Ben, and Jacob Schoenborn. And last, but not least, two great, great grandchildren, Mirra Cripps and Kai Nikolovski. Ruth was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Shampine and Raymond Plaunt; daughter, Bev Griggs; and brothers, Alfred and Collin Neumann.

Ruth’s family will receive friends at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Cheboygan on Friday March 22, 2019 from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Pastor Dave Hueter will officiate. Ruth’s final resting place will be at Maple Grove Cemetery.
