Mrs. Hawkins, the former Gwendolyn Louise McDowell, was born October 8, 1928 in Mt. Pleasant. She was the daughter of Emmet Forrest and Mary Ruth (Boyd) McDowell. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. Gwen was united in marriage to Richard Gordon Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins died Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant.
Gwen was a lifelong homemaker. She and her husband made their home in Ft. Dodge for many years while they raised their family. In 1983, they moved to a farm near Moulton, IA, where they raised cattle. They moved to Mt. Pleasant in 2006.
Mrs. Hawkins was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church in Ft. Dodge and attended the United Methodist churches in Moulton and Mt. Pleasant. She enjoyed quilting and quilted with the church circle in Moulton. She enjoyed bird watching and raising flowers in her garden, especially roses, peonies and star gazer lilies. Above all, her family was near and dear to her heart.
In addition to her parents and husband, Gwen is preceded in death by her sister and husband, Shirley and Lawrence Andries, brothers Donald, Bruce “Dick” and John “Brad” McDowell and his wife Shirley and brother-in-law John Liechty.
