A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Ray and Mary Ethel Johnson Mashburn. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lynn Mashburn Stark, who died in 2007. James was a former supervisor at Dayco with 29 years of service and was also a former tax appraiser for Haywood County. James was a veteran of the North Carolina National Guard. James was serving as Alderman for the Town of Clyde. His career in public service began in 2000 when he served on the Clyde Planning Board. In 2004 he was appointed to serve as Alderman, the position he held until the time of his passing. He loved his community, the citizens and the employees. Alderman Mashburn served his role with great pride and will be missed by all. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. James enjoyed the fellowship of playing golf at Lake Junaluska every Wednesday from spring until fall with his friends, Howard Cook, Buddy Ledford, Bob Bradley, Bob Wood and Jack Horton.
James is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joyce Messer Mashburn; a daughter, Shayne Clark of Waynesville; a son, Tom Clark and wife, Keila, of Fletcher; two brothers, Joel Mashburn and wife, Janie, of Statesville and Waynesville and Joe Mashburn and wife, Nora, of Waynesville; four grandchildren, Ryan McElroy and wife, Michelle, Sara Stevenson, Alexandria Clark, Jeremy Parris and wife, Karan; and five great-grandchildren, Will, Ava and Zoé Stevenson and Colson and Conner Parris.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 39 Robinson Road, Canton, NC, 28716, with Reverend Jeff King and Reverend Dr. T. David Phillips officiating.
