Roger (Gene) Dixon finished his earthly journey on 11/22/2017-- and is now home with his Heavenly Father, the Lord Jesus Christ. He became a Christian when he was 9 years old and baptized in the First Baptist Church of Mexia, Texas by Pastor Dunlop. He is survived by his beloved wife Carole Gandy Dixon, whom he met while stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia: a son Roger and his wife Tammy Conner; a daughter Anita and husband Stan Skinner; Grandchildren: Michelle Dixon and husband Samuel Unger; Kevin Dixon and wife Michelle Morley; Erika McGrady and husband Damon Crutcher; Erin Dixon and husband Scot Rivera; and Joshua Dixon who was sadly, autistic from birth. There are 13 great grandchildren Rebekah, Jacob, Michael, Gabriel and Josiah Unger; William and Nicholas Crutcher; Isabel, Katelyn and Emily Rivera; Autumn, Seth and Emma Dixon. Gene was born on September 20, 1929, in Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma, the second son of Roger Kirk and Rose Bohanan Dixon. Following the stock market crash of 1929, the family moved to the oilfields of East Texas where his father went to work for the Humble Pipeline Company. Gene’s elementary and Junior High schooling and two years of High School were in Mexia, Texas. He completed the final two years of High School at Talco, Texas, where he graduated as Valedictorian with the Class of 1946. He attended Paris Jr. College from 1946-48. After working for Gregg Construction Company a year, he enrolled at North Texas State College in the fall of 1949. He graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Arts. He was a member of the Geezle Fraternity. After graduation, he entered the Army for a stint of two years at Camp Rucker, Alabama, and Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. The highlight of his Army service was meeting his future wife, Carole Virginia Gandy, whom he met while stationed at Ft. Belvoir and later married January 16, 1954 in Alexandria, Virginia. Following an Honorable Discharge from the Army in May of 1954, he and his wife moved to Midland, Texas, where he worked for Shell Oil Company in various assignments. They were blessed with two children, Roger and Anita. In 1974, they transferred to Houston. He retired from Shell Oil in 1991 after 37 years of service. His hobbies included hunting and fishing. Roger was first called Poppy by his granddaughter Erika and afterwards all the grandchildren and great grandchildren called him Poppy. “Poppy,” we’ll miss you dearly.
