Nelson Eugene Hamm was the third child born to Joseph Eugene and Elizabeth Smith Hamm. His birthdate was October 9, 1962, a birthday he shared with his sister who was eleven years older. Nelson graduated from McNairy Central High School in 1980 and attended UT Martin where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho; he also attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College. His early years found him playing and working in the family store, A. B. Hamm & Co. as the fifth generation of merchants. Nelson worked in corporate for Wal Mart until he was disabled on the job.

Nelson was kind and considerate and took pride in caring for those around him. He enjoyed being in nature, hunting and fishing. He was particularly invaluable to his parents the last years of their lives. His family ties, Hamm, Houston, Huggins, Neill, McAlpin, Blasingame, Smith, Burks and Milligan among them, were grounded in the early settlers of McNairy County.

He is survived by his daughter, Alexandria Jane Hamm (Charles Arutt), a sister, Jacque Hamm May (Jim), niece, Elizabeth Hamm May-West (Susan) and twin great-nephew and niece, Henry James and Ila Elizabeth May-West, and a host of friends.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Robert Hamm, maternal grandparents, McKinley and Lettye Burks Smith and paternal grandparents, Eugene Robert & Ila McAlpin Hamm.
