David "George" Joe (Cioe), age 100, formerly of Fairmont, died March 9, 2019 in Seattle, Washington at the Washington Care Center. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. George was born November 27, 1918 in Fairmont, WV, the son of the late Pietro (Pete) and Rose (Valicenti) Joe (Cioe).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Domenick "Gooch" Joe (Cioe), Ermaun Joe (Cioe), Dominic "Nick" Rich; and four sisters, Angelina Joe (Cioe), Lina Rich, Mary (Rich) Graziani, and Carmela (Valicenti) Graziani; and six nephews, David L. Joe, James D. Rich, John B. Graziani, Paul Graziani, Albert Graziani, and Daniel Graziani.
George is survived by four nieces, Shirley Dell (Joe) Watkins of Fredricksburg, VA; Patricia (Graziani) Fleckenstein of Glen Burnie, MD, Rosemarie Rich of Martinsburg, WV, and Brenda (Joe) Giannis of Fairmont, and four nephews, Ermaun Lee Joe of Fairmont, David Rich of Buffalo, WV, Joe Graziani of Parkersburg, WV, and Michael Graziani of Ravenswood, WV.
He is also survived by 38 great nieces and nephews and numerous great-great nieces and nephews of the Joe, Graziani, and Rich families.
George's alma mater was St. Peter's High School. He had a beautiful singing voice and sang at various venues, including on the radio while he was in Fairmont and in night clubs in Seattle. George moved to Seattle, Washington in the 1940's and made the Pacific Northwest his home for over 75 years. One of his first jobs was working as a doorman/usher at an upscale hotel in Seattle where he met several famous sports figures, singers, and actors. He eventually opened his own antique shop, which he operated many years. George loved his home in Seattle and the moderate climate, especially the rain. He had a passion for music, antiques, gardening, and Starbucks coffee. But his greatest passion was the love he had for his family and friends and his faith in God. To all of his nieces and nephews, he was a great uncle.
The family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Avenue in Fairmont, on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church with Father Joseph Konikattil as celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairmont.
