While still in college, she met her first husband Dana Tirrell, and they married in 1953. They shared a love of the ocean and antiques. Living in a few different coastal communities, they then settled in Cape Elizabeth, and raised their three children. Dana had an antique shop in Portland, and Kathleen ran The Gull Shop, located in her father’s former shop.
She was reacquainted with an old classmate, Vaughn LaCombe, whom she married in 1978. They moved south for two years, then returned to Maine, to the village of Blue Hill. It was there, Kathleen realized two dreams. She self-published a cook book and opened the Blue Hill Lunch. Kathleen and Vaughn shared a passion for cooking and entertaining. Many happy hours were spent with friends cooking and eating elaborate meals. Kathleen also loved her dogs, she had a black lab, and three golden retrievers, who gave her great pleasure.
She moved many times over the years, and greatly enjoyed decorating each home, wallpapering, and painting, placing artwork and furniture were a priority with each new place. They all had a homey feel to them within a very short time!
She touched many lives and had many friends throughout her lifetime. Former classmates, and co-workers, stayed in touch with her right up until the end. Everyone admired her grit, and positive outlook on life, and her perseverance. She always had something positive to say and had a great sense of humor.
Kathleen was predeceased by husband Vaughn, son Putnam Tirrell, and first husband Dana Tirrell, Sr.
She is survived by sisters, Elizabeth Horn, of Mansfield MA, Gloria Watson, of Portland; daughter, Elizabeth Dolloff and husband, Thomas, of Sebago; son, Dana Tirrell, Jr., of Cape Elizabeth; seven grandchildren and one great-grand child; several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held in June, in Cape Elizabeth, for family and friends.
