Hawai'i Senator. John Takeji Ushijima, of Hilo, Hawai'i, a niisei World War II survivor and veteran, served as a Sergeant in the United States Army and was a member of the 442nd "Go For Broke" Regimental Combat Team, Cannon Company. He is the son of Buhachi and Sado, who immigrated from Japan separately, his mom with his eldest brother. He and his siblings mostly grew up in Lincoln Park and often played various sports with his gang. After the Army, he went to college at Glendale(?) in Iowa and also played quarterback on their football team. He served in the Hawai'i State Senate from 1959 through 1982, and from 1974 to 1978 he served as Senate president. While serving in the legislature, he influenced landmark pieces of legislation, including the Pre-Paid Health Care Act and laws on gender discrimination. He was known for his support of development and growth particularly on his home island of Hawai'i, although criticized for it. He later served over seven years as a member of the University of Hawai'i Board of Regents. He was also a former President of the Royal State Insurance Company, a founding member of Cyanotech Corporation, and retired as an attorney from Ushijimi & Ushijima. John is survived by his wife, Margaret; brother, Shigeru; sisters, Shizue Akiyama and Toshiko Shigekane. Visitation and service was held Monday afternoon on August 21, 2006 at the Church of the Holy Cross in Hilo. No flowers. Casual attire. Arrangements were by Dodo Mortuary in Hilo.
