Celebrating the Life of Emma Jean Wyatt

Emma Jean Harris was born in Mendenhall, Mississippi on March 4, 1937, the second of nine children of Mattie Lee Brown Harris and A.C. Harris. She attended grade school and secondary school in Mississippi before she travelled with her family to the Pacific Northwest in 1952.
In 1954, Emma married Johnnie Ray Wyatt and they settled in Yakima and raised three daughters, Nora Jean, Renita Rae and Joyce Ann, and one son, Karl Leroy. She became a member of Victory Church of God and Christ in Yakima, remained faithful to the Church for more than sixty years, and served in many capacities including choir member, pianist, secretary, treasurer and Sunday School Superintendent until she became ill in 2016.
Once her children finished high school, Emma continued her education and took classes at Central Washington University; she obtained a teaching assistant certificate and joined the staff at A.C. Davis Senior High School where she worked with students with special needs. She thoroughly enjoyed this work and served as a volunteer and chaperon for students participating in the Special Olympics. Prior to her retirement from Davis High School, Emma was honored as “Best Teacher.”
Emma also enjoyed styling hair; she completed beauty school and opened her own beauty salon, “Emma’s New Hair Design.” In addition to accepting customers at her home-based salon, Emma would visit nursing homes to style and cut hair for men and women patients at care facilities in Yakima and surrounding communities.
Emma loved music and ensured that all of her children learned to play instruments; she encouraged them to play music at school and church. When she wasn’t attending church or working, Emma enjoyed sewing and quilting. She made quilts and displayed them at the Central Washington State Fair but was happiest when she made quilts for her family.
Emma became ill in 2016 and moved from Yakima to Oregon so that she would be closer to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After an extended illness, Emma passed away quietly at Grove and Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Forest Grove, Oregon on March 6, 2019, just two days after her 82nd birthday.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie, and daughter, Renita Rae Wyatt Gammage; sister, Ruby Dell Harris; brothers, Harvey Harris (infant), Eugene Harris, Commic Harris, and Hertis Lee Harris; mother, Mattie Lee Brown Harris, and father, A.C. Harris.
Emma is survived by her daughter Nora Wyatt Potter (Gregorio) of Hillsboro, Oregon; son Karl Wyatt (Mary) of Happy Valley, Oregon; daughter Evangelist Joyce A. Ware of Killeen, Texas; step-son, Johnny Wyatt of Port Gibson, Mississippi; grandsons Anthony Mims (Christalyn), Dominique Mims (Carmen), Alton McCane, Titus McCane, Charles Wyatt, Randy Wyatt, and Jeremy Wyatt; granddaughters Syreeta Mims, Mariah Mims, Anetria McCane, Marita Gammage, Desiree Drisk, and Khaleelah Young; great-grandsons Taylor Rich, Terell Mims, Darius Mims, Asante Mims, Alton McCane IV, Ramsey Wyatt, Maxwell Wyatt, Tevian Wyatt, Kiambrian Wyatt, and Aa’Yenda Young Drisk; great-granddaughters Tyannah Mims, Raevah Mims, Sarmiah Mims, D’Asia McCane, Keyara McCane, Avion McCane, Sloan Wyatt, La’Naya Young Drisk, and Amaya Young; her sister-in-law, Lucille Harris of Yakima, Washington; brother, Cyrus Harris of Vancouver, Washington; sister Bessie N. Gratton of Seattle, Washington; and sister Joann Francis (Roy) of Seattle, Washington; a brother-in law, Ernest Campbell of Stockton, California; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
A service celebrating Emma’s life and homegoing will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 22, 2019 at Shaw & Sons Funeral Home in Yakima.
