Samuel H. Aurandt, Retired BCI Mechant, Dies Saturday at 98
Coalport – Samuel H. Aurandt, 98-year-old retired merchant of the BCI area, died Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Bardell Convalescent Home at Utahville RD, where he had been a guest since August 1959. He had been in ill health for the past year. Mr. Aurandt operated a general merchandise store at Irvona from November 1888 until he retired in 1928. He continued residing at Irvona until 1943 when he took up residence with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Williams of Coalport, with whom he lived for 16 years. A son of the late William and Martha (Garland) Aurandt, he was born Dec. 28, 1861, at Bald Eagle and spent his early life in Centre County. He married the former Emma Savage who preceded him in death July 22, 1927. A son, William Benner Aurandt, died June 9, 1947. Surviving are two daughters and one son: Mrs. Chester F. (Dorothy) Ketrick, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Naomi Williams, Coalport; Mahlon S. Aurandt, Bridgeport, Conn.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a longtime member of the Irvona Methodist Church and a member of the F & AM Lodge since 1900. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the George R. Bell Funeral Home, Coalport, with interment to follow in the Utahville Cemetery. The Rev. Bernard J. Shropshire, pastor of the Coalport Methodist Parish, will officiate. Masonic services will be held tonight at 8 o’clock in the funeral home. Friends are now being received at the funeral home until time of services tomorrow. Samuel Aurandt, Retired Coalport Merchant, Observes 93rd Birthday
Coalport – Samuel Aurandt of Coalport, retired merchant and long-time resident of the Beccaria-Coalport-Irvona area, observed his 93rd birthday Tuesday, Dec. 28. Mr. Aurandt quietly spent the day with his son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. Gordon Williams of Main street, Coalport, with whom he has made his home since February, 1943. Friends called and extended good wishes. He was the recipient of many gifts and cards. Five years ago Mr. Aurandt was guest of honor at an open house for 60 guests with Mrs. Williams serving as hostess. Mr. Aurandt was born at Bald Eagle December 28, 1861, the son of the late William and Martha Aurandt. His ancestors were French Huguenots, who came to this country on the ship Edenburg in 1753, settling in Pennsylvania near Reading. His first business venture was in Snow Shoe. In 1886 he moved to Tipton, where he worked as a clerk for Captain Charlie Frieberger. In 1888 he located in Irvona where he established a general merchandise store and continued this field of endeavor until 1931 when he retired. Prior to his retail business, Mr. Aurandt was a teamster, hauling from Ashville to Altoona. He vividly recalls the depiction of unpaved 11th avenue in Altoona during the 19th century. He was united in marriage to Emma Savage, and they were the parents of four children, including: William B. Aurandt (deceased); Dorothea I. Kerrick, living in Los Angeles, Calif.; Naomi M. Williams, Coalport, and Mahlon S. Aurandt, living in Bridgeport, Conn. Mr. Aurandt has four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is a member of the Methodist Church, having served as Sunday School superintendent at Irvona for nearly 20 years. He is still active in church work. He has been a member of the F & AM Masonic Lodge of Coalport for 55 years, serving as past master of the local Masonic Order. During the BCI area Sesquicentennial celebration last June, Mr. Aurandt was among the longtime residents who were honored guests as a dinner served by Brinkman’s Restaurant. He also participated in other activities of the county celebration. His hobbies and interests include woodcraft, reading and television. His close associates stated the Mr. Aurandt is exceedingly mentally alert despite his age and is enjoying remarkable good health. (The Progress January 8, 1955)
