George Luckhardt, 61, assistant chief of the Muscatine fire department, died at his home, 528 Mulberry avenue, at 11:55 a.m.
today. He had been in failing for some time, but not until the last 10 days had his condition been considered serious. Death was caused by heart trouble and complications.

Mr. Luckhardt was born June 30, 1875, in Germany. He came to the United States at the age of 14 years, making his home in Muscatine where he has resided since. He married Clara B. Bitzer in Muscatine on Nov. 29, 1899 and the couple had resided here since.

A glazer by trade, Mr. Luckhardt was employed at the Roach and Musser factory here for 20 years before becoming a member of the paid fire department here on June 1, 1916. He had been in active service on the department since, serving as assistant chief since Ocr. 1, 1920.

Before joining the regular department, Mr. Luckhardt was a member of the Roach and Musser volunteer department. He was also a Spanish-American war veteran, having enlisted in 1898 and re-enlisted later, to serve 15 years in all. He held the position of first lieutenant at the time of his discharge.

He was a prominent as a lodgeman. He was a charter member of Muscatine lodge No. 188, Loyal Order of Moose, and held memberships in the Elks and Eagles lodges. He was a member of the United Brethren church.

Surviving besides his widow are a daughter, Mrs. Violet Moody of Rock Island, a son Clarence H. of Kellogg, Idaho; a half-brother and a half-sister residing in Germany. A son, Melvin, preceded him in death eight years ago. Four grandchildren also survive.

Funeral arrangements were in-complete today pending word from relatives.
