Mr. Rex Johnson Shaw, 86, of Farmer Rd., Denton passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at his residence.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 19 at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. David Lancaster and Rev. Gerald Ward presiding. Interment will follow at Lineberry United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors by the United States Air Force.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton and other times at the residence on Farmer Rd.
Mr. Shaw was born in Randolph County on August 14, 1932 to Val H. Shaw and Mary Grace Johnson Shaw. Rex was raised by his Father and Mother’s families in the New Hope Community following his mother’s death when he was 4 years old. He moved in his grandfather Jesse Frank Shaw with his uncle William Penn Shaw and aunt Genie Shaw later they would have Daddy’s (foster) brother Charlie Gray Shaw who was nine years his junior. Rex’s baby sister Louise who was raised by her mother’s sister in Thomasville, NC.
Rex was career Airman during both Korea and Vietnam. He served in the US Air Force for over 20 years. During his career he served his country from Japan to Madrid, Spain where he was retired home. Rex and Elwina were married for about 58 years prior to her untimely death. He often said she was the “Bell of the Ball and he was her greatest admirer.”
Rex was brought into the ‘Fold of Gold’ at age 16 in a community revival and with his profession of faith God gained a loyal worker in the fields of God. Together Rex and Elwina planted a Southern Baptist Church at every assignment as well as a host of lifelong friends. He raised three children with the use of scriptures and grace and it was a pleasure to call him Daddy, Papaw Shaw, and Papaw Great.
In his last few weeks he was surrounded by friends and family from both young and old who filled his home. He commented that he had made really good friends in his life.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Elwina Lanier Shaw; Father, Val H. Shaw and Mother, Mary Grace Johnson Shaw; Mom, Genie Saunders Shaw; Pop William Penn Shaw; Brother, Charlie Gray Shaw.
He is survived by: Daughter’s Anna Shaw Allred and husband Jesse Allred; Dawn Shaw Frank and husband John Frank; Son, Scott Shaw and wife Karen Grubb Shaw. Grandchildren: Coley John Frank and wife Kimberly Herring Frank; Amber Frank Goodman and husband Greg Goodman; Jeromy Scott Allred and wife Jenny Ryerson Allred; Christopher Johnson Frank and Kelly Johnson; Caleb Scott Shaw; Nathan Thomas Shaw. “The Little’s” (Great Grandchildren): Riley Anna Allred; Jaxson Allen Allred; Lainey Danielle Goodman; Willow Grace Frank and Lennon McKay Frank. Sister: Louise Shaw Grubb and Carl Grubb and Sister (in Laws): Dot Russell Shaw; Lola Lanier Scarboro; Margeriet Lanier Nance; Betty Joe Lanier Yates; Ann Lanier See. He had a host of nieces and nephews who loved dearly.
