He was born November 17, 1942 in Hancock County, IL to John Freeman and Mary Maxine Buckert Wells. He married Linda Kirby on August 25, 2000.
Gene was a graduate of Hamilton High School in Hamilton, IL and earned a M.A. from Western Illinois University. He taught art for 35 years in high schools in Illinois, Colorado and in Keosauqua, IA. He was a paramedic and Ambulance Director for Van Buren County Hospital. He also taught EMT training for several years.
Gene was an artist, creating jewelry, painting and photography.
He was a member of Elks Lodge #1319 in Lamar, CO.
Surviving is his wife, Linda; his daughter, Jan Seyfert of Hamilton, IL; step-children, Melody (Lowell) Johns of Ottumwa, Brenda (Eric) Jensen of Hedrick and Michael (Lindee) Thomas of Milton; 8 grandchildren, Aiden, Paige, Seth, Tyler, Mason, Jaxon, Walker and Lainee; a very special great-granddaughter, Brenlynn; a sister, Brenda (Tim) Etter of Nauvoo, IL; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Vinny.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Terry Wells; and siblings, Wayne, Larry, Donnie and Kevin Wells and Lesa Willis.
His body has been cremated. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
