Douglas David Hawkins, 95, of Safford, peacefully passed into eternity on February 19, 2019. Doug was born August 23, 1923 in Eden, Arizona to David Elisha & Lula Colvin Hawkins.

Doug attended schools in Pima and spent his free time helping on the family farm in Eden. In 1943 he joined the United States Army earning the rank of Corporal, serving during World War II, before being honorably discharged in 1945. One of his commanders was the Hollywood actor Jimmy Stewart, he was quite fond of that and loved to tell the story of it.

After his discharge he returned home where he fell in love with Edith Jean Foster. On November 30, 1946 the couple married in Lordsburg, New Mexico and to this union came Carolyn Jean, Marilyn Sue, Cathy Ann, Jimmy Douglas and Brenda Joyce Hawkins. Doug farmed all over the Gila Valley from Ft. Thomas, to Ashhurst, to Eden and back again. The family settled in Pima during the 1960's and had a fine home there where the kids could be nearer to schools and town while Doug could still continue his farming. He loved spending time gardening, hunting and fishing.

Doug is survived by his children, Marilyn Sue (Sam) Smith, Cathy Ann (Marvin) Ray, Jimmy Douglas Hawkins and son-in-law Bob Benitez, his siblings Billy John Hawkins, Dave E Hawkins, Dan C Hawkins and Loretta Jane Hawkins Graves, 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Edith Hawkins, his parents David and Lula Hawkins, his 2 daughters Carolyn Jean Hawkins, who died as an infant, and Brenda Joyce Hawkins Benitez.

A viewing will be held on Sunday evening, February 24, 2019 from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. at the McDougal's Caldwell Funeral Chapel and again on Monday morning, February 25th at 9:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Pima Stake Center after which the funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Bishop Paul Anger conducting.
